Another year, another S.P.A.C.E. convention in the back pocket. S.P.A.C.E. was my first comic convention that I ever attended, and my first convention to exhibit at. Every year I do a little better then the previous year. This year was no exception. S.P.A.C.E. stands for Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo and is the longest running show of it’s kind. I really enjoy the feel of the show, a lot of people looking for something unusual or out of the mainstream.

Last year I bought a button maker and have been selling buttons at shows. I clip up old comics and make them into one-inch buttons. A lot of kids don’t have a lot of money to spend at shows like this. Selling little kid friendly odds and ends carves out a nice little market for me. And it brings people to my booth. Stop for the buttons, talk about the comics.

Another thing that people talk about is the Gashapon machine on my table. I told you good folks already about my luck with local garage sales, right. Well sales of the first Akatomago manga comic are doing very well so far. It even made it to finalist in this years S.P.A.C.E. prize in the mini comics category.

My next show is in two weeks. Appleseed is the mid-west’s most talked about artist only show. Formerly Summit City Comic Con, Appleseed is the show to go to if you want to meet your favorite mainstream artist or writer, and groundlings like myself. May 11, at the Grand Wayne center. Cosplayers welcome! Kids welcome! Your welcome!

PS: I’m debating attending Ikasucon. I missed the deadline for a table, and late admittance is a lot more moneis than I’m comfortable spending on a table. If I know people visiting this site will be there, I may bite the bullet and shell out for a table. (And hope I make back the costs)

Let me know by May 10th. I have something planned for July that will take the place of the show. Maybe another “At Home Con”.

This was taken on Sunday of the show. I was tired. If I change one thing about the show, it would be skipping Sundays.

I’d go to the Lego store Instead. ==:> D

My first convention of the year is fast apoching. Maybe too fast. It’s this weekend.

Saturday I will be attending the Small Press and Alternative Comix Expo (S.P.A.C.E.) in Columbus Ohio. The show is both Saturday and Sunday, and I’ll share a table with my good friend Ben Teide. I want to encourage people to show up to conventions to see me if possible. So I have come up with an incentive.

Use this Coupon for a free black and white inked 5 x 7 sketch card.

S.P.A.C.E. is this week end and might be a bit short notice for some of you, but Appleseed and Ikasucon are further down the road.

For information on S.P.A.C.E. go to backporchcomics.com/space

Appleseed comic con was formerly Summit City Comic con, and can be found here and is named after Fort Wayne’s folk hero, Johnny Appleseed.

Ikasucon is an anime convention. This will be my first year attending, and I’m not sure what to expect. For more information on that show go to www.ikasucon.org

I look forward to seeing fans this year, and love meeting new people.

Hopefully I won’t be a total space cadet this year. ==:>’

lets start out with this.

This is james. He was born in November, and since then I’ve been a bit busy. My other job is Stay at home dad, so studio time has to be juggled with lunch packing and butt scraping. Once things got back to normal, he’s a pretty mellow little guy. I took some time off of doing comics so that I could settle things house side until my wife went back to work. The last three weeks have been the two of us getting a routine down. I think I got this guy figured out. But the minute I say something like that, he’ll throw me something new. Thats just the way it goes.

Bridgette will be back this week. But due to family matters (I’m just going to say “Baby” from now on) the update schedule will be more spread out. possible every other week. I’d like to go back to weekly, but we’ll see.

Toc-Tic will be back by the end of March. I say that now fully realizing that when ever I say things like that, I usually screw up and drop the ball down the road and into a gutter full of dog shit. I’m not doing color, I’m just gonna head down and bore through this comic and get it up and out there. That too will be back with a spread out schedule. At best I should have two comics per week to pencil and ink.

happy ==:> )

Latter on I’ll have a post about conventions I’ll be attending this year. I also have some more cerebral postings that I want to tackle, specifically “What is modern anthro”. (At least by my definition)

Bridgette’s Belly volume eight is very close to completion. It might be up for sale by March. There I go again, the balls in my hands and I can see a dog down the road squatting over a sewer drain.

At least the balls washable.

I’ll keep this short cause I have better things to worry about. but here goes.

The argument is that people who cosplay, or the majority of them, are not actually fans of the things they cosplay. That these folks are just looking for an excuse to play dress up or use their halloween costumes again. There is an heir of elitism in this line of thinking that is self destructive. If we start pointing out who is and who isn’t “Geek” enough, then we risk alienating future generations of comic, sci-fi and fantasy fans. We also risk becoming more and more fractured. Look at what has happened to Furry. Comic conventions are pretty homogenous. There are Star Wars fans, Star Trek fans, anime, movie, video game fans, but furry is a whole other convention. Granted other factors are at play there, but the same elitist mentality did play out in many furr centric conventions. We need to be more open to new fans. New fans bring new fandoms, and fresh blood to what would be an otherwise dying medium. I think when it comes to the accusation that these folks at not true “Geeks” keep in mind. When someone who chooses to step into a convention for what ever reason. They will be exposed to the world that we, the insiders know, and they will leave changed for the better. We need to be the ambassadors of geek culture. They may like a sitcom that bases it’s humor on playing with stereotypes of geek culture (And many other cultures mind you), but they will see what real geek culture is like. They’ll see the fathers and sons, mothers and daughters sitting down at tables to play D&D. They’ll see whole families attending, not just the ones in costume. Maybe they’ll go down artist alley and see people like me and my friends making art and running small businesses. Eventually what will happen is that these so called “fake fans” will be come true fans.

New fans bring many things. And all of them are good.
